fixed my key fob this weekend:
dunked it in water. Really. It had stopped working (again) for about a week and I accidentally got coffee all over it. So I figured since it wasnt working anyway I might as well get the sticky coffee smell off it. Presto - - now it works. does this count as a mod?

I'd change your battery and put it in a baggie with dessicant for a while
wanna make sure you get all the moisture out of that fob or you may get some oxidation from the battery and really ruin it.

I have an idea -- I'll demand a new one. Maybe it will work as well as my minivan's
3 years running that has gotten wet, never busted and performs more functions. Yeah I'll put it in a baggie, add some dessicant, then put it in a perfectly dehumidified case, and air dry it after every using. PLEASE! Can Audi make a wiper that works and a key fob that lasts?

I would recommend one more thing.
Common misconception is water ruins electronics. Not true.
What ruins electronics is the contaminants in water, i.e., salts, electrolytes, minerals, etc. These are all conductors of electricity (in varying degrees) and this connectivity puts electricity where it shouldn't be and voila! Bad circuits.
What you NEED to do is take some distilled water (or better yet Fomlin) rinse the outside case with the liquid.
If you want to clean the inside, snap the FOB in half (small screwdriver works) and then pop the part with the pushbuttons in half. Use isopropyl alcohol (NOT rubbing alcohol) and clean the PCB with the alcohol...rinsing it several times with the alchol.
ENSURE both batteries are out of the circuit before doing performing the cleaning.
Let air dry for 10 mins and reassemble.
Good as new (provided no previous damage was done by the contaminant liquid).
