Default ENGINE FIRE!!! Allroad C5 2.7t

Hi Guys,
My Allroad C5 has been sitting in my garage for about 3 weeks, as I've broken my arm and cant drive it. About once every week I start it up and let it run for a few mins.
Today I went to start it up and was surprised to see the battery was dead. Weird. After about 4 hours charging the battery I fired up the engine. Instantly I noticed the engine noise seemed wrong. Like a metalic scraping noise.
I stepped out of the car, and as the bonnet was already open I looked in the engine bay. I was shocked to see flames coming up on the left side front from under where the left side headlight is. Even with my broken arm and full arm cast, I went into turbo mode and turned the engine off. I quickly doused the the area with about 2 litres of water I had a at hand. The fire reduced in size, until I could quickly grab an extinguisher and put it out. In total the fire burnt for about 2 mins.

As I have a broken arm, there is no way I can pull anything apart to have a better look. I've had a look with a flashlight into the engine bay on the left front side, but can't see any damage at all, Although there is still a bit of extinguisher powder everywhere.

I'm wondering what you guys thing could have caught fire, or what component was burning?

It was a certainly terrifying experience.

Cheers

Wow! A fire of any kind in your garage is a scary thing, broken arm or not! It's great that you were prepared and had an extinguisher handy. As for what caused it, my guess is the power steering pump as you said the engine noise was different and it seems to be the left front corner of the engine, Just a guess of course......

Headlight wiring the insulation cracks and falls off. Then you get the short circuit

My full arm cast comes off in less than a week. Then probably a couple of weeks rehabilitation, then I'm hoping to finally have a look at the Allroad.
My best guess is as you described...faulty connection to the lights.
Will let you know what I find.

Hi all,
Well I've finally been able to have a look at the Allroad.
Seems it was the radiator fan control module (or the connector) that burnt.

I can find a replacement control unit, but does anyone know the part number for the wiring loom?
The car is now up on car jacks and tomorrow I'll attempt to put it into service mode, and have a good look at the burnt area...hopefully nothing else is damaged or destroyed.

Cheers and happy new year.
Philip

Got it out.
Anyone know where I can either get a harness or a bunch of connectors for this unit?
