DRL Info - Moving Car to Canada
<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/1127/img_0786.jpg"></center><p>I just finished making the modification and after reading lots of threads (see below for the collection I was using based on 'search'), I came up with a solution of my own that wasn't quite the same as the others.
I read the following links:
<a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/allroad/msgs/223398.phtml">Fog Light Mod</a>
<a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/allroad/msgs/214612.phtml">DRL When Ignition Hot</a>
<a href="https://www.audiworld.com/tech/elec43.shtml">Audiworld FAQ A6</a>
<a href="http://www.allroadfaq.com/downloads/mods/foglight_mod.pdf">allroad FAQ Fog Light Mod</a>
Here's what I did differently. I bridged the #1 and #8 wires (see pic above). The #1 wire runs 12v when the ignition is on. The #8 wire normally runs 12v only after the fog lights are turned on.
I did somehow manage to fry the #39 fuse (hazard) at some point when messing with the fog light mods above. But I have replaced it with a new one and didn't have any issues in about 30 minutes of road testing.
So in summary, for true DRLs (fogs on when the ignition is on), the separate fog light mod is unnecessary. On my 2002, the simple bridging of wires on the headlight switch were enough.

How is your mod working?
I like your headlight switch jumper method over the others. How is it working? Do you have a fuse on your jumper? 10 amp or 15 amp? It looks simple and effective. Thanks. Bill

Yep, the two wires pictured
I started in the fuse box with a jumper wire, but that only allows you to turn the fogs on any time. I wanted my fogs on with the ignition, regardless of the switch position (like true DRLs).
So I followed the other threads that said the jumper the wires on the switch itself. Once I had that done, the stuff in the fuse box was unnecessary.
One thing to note is that the parking lights are *not* on with this mod. I've seen some audis in Canada with parking lights on as well as fogs. I'm not sure what the 'factory' config is.

I took your great idea for the DRLs one step further
Josh,
Many thanks for your thorough work and explanation on how you turned your fogs into full-time DRLs, switched by the ignition.
I figured I would take your foundation and build on it by making mine also have an "off" option.
Bridging the #1 and #8 wires keeps the fogs on whenever the ignition is on regardless of the headlight switch. This is very, very quick and easy to do and certainly something I would suggest for those who are just wanting to satisfy Canadian requirements or who are happy having fogs on even with hi/lo headlights.
I wanted, however, to give myself the option of disabling the always-on DRL/fogs and, have the fogs function normally via the headlight switch especially at night. (Most times, I do not like to use the fogs.)
So, I added a rocker switch in the bridge from the #1 and #8 headlight wires. When switched on, the DRL/fogs come on with the ignition and stay on all the time, regardless of the headlight switch position, so I can have only fogs, parking and fogs, low beam and fogs or high beam and fogs.
But, when I don't want the fogs on, I just use my DRL switch to turn them off and the fogs then function as they would normally, (ie, via the headlight switch.)
I also added a 15 amp fuse in the line to give me some added protection and a ground wire for the switch.
So, the final result is I have a wire tap on the #1 lead with a wire running through the 15 amp fuse and into the "supply" pole on the illuminated rocker switch. I then ran a wire from the "load" pole on the switch to a wire tap into the #8 wire on the headlight switch. And finally a ground wire from the "earth" pole on the switch to a good ground on next to the fuse box.
I drilled a 1/2" hole in the lower panel, directly below the headlight switch and mounted the illuminated rocker switch there. Easy to see the small LED light when it's on and very unobtrusive when it's not.
Thanks Josh for the inspiration and guidance.
