Do all 2001 allroads have an immobilizer?
There seems to be some uncertainty in archives as to whether all 2001 allroads have the immobilizer. Some suggest that only 2001.5 and later allroads (and Audis generally) have the immobilizer. Is this right?
I need to have new keys made for my allroad (lost all of them). If it has an immobilizer I will need to pay the dealer an extra $125 to program the key to the immobilzer (which seems to be a ridiculous amount for want is involved, which is on top of the ridiculous price for the key, all made worse becuase I have to tow the car in to the dealer to get it done -- this is all one very, very annoying design/policy).
If there is no immobilizer, then I don't need them to program it (I can do the remote locking system myself). But, the dealer would probably charge me the programming fee whether I need it or not. Is there any way of knowing (without have a key) whether the car has an immobilizer or not? Can you tell from the VIN number, or the date of manufacturer, or any other code or sign?
Thanks!

In the US, yes they should. You can tell by seeing if you get the Immo symbol on your dashboard at
startup. Sideview picture of a car with a key. Do you remember seeing it?
The other way is via VAG-COM/VCDS but with no keys at all you can't use that.

I don't remember seeing an immobilizer symbol on the dash
I don't remember see that symbol. I just looked it up to see what it looks like and I don't remember seeing it. I remember the EPC light, the suspension light and the ESP light, but that is all I remember. I've been driving the car for so many years that you just don't notice a lot of small things any more.
Is there any way to find out for sure?
If I called up Audi of America and gave them my VIN number could they tell me? Would they tell me?
Maybe becuase mine was made in the year 2000 (November) it doesn't have it? I don't know.

Re: I don't have that symbol on my 2001...
If the dealer will give me the key without programming, I'll give it a try. However they seemed to indicated that I had to bring (that is, tow) the car in for programming.
It would be nice if there was a way to find out for sure whether is has an immobilizer or not.
It would be nice to save $150 in towing and another $125 in programming charges (not to mention the huge hassle).
