crosspost --the allroad lives?
#12
I'll just add one thing to this discussion and that is the SUVs that the Q7 and potentially the C6
allroad would have competed with were not marketed or sold in large part to individuals that wanted to use their in off road, off pavement, snow and ice conditions. Every Cayenne I sit behind in traffic has nothing more than road grime on the under carriage, same with Hummers or do I need to say the same about Escalades or Navigators. It's not that therer isn't a market for an luxury vehicles with off pavement capability, it's just that people buy them for their appearance of off roadiness (and the "f*** off" factor of that appearance, if you'll pardon the language) the allroad has the misfortune in these times of conducting itself properly in polite company. That sort of thing has been out of style. Unless you're Richard Dean Anderson, god bless him.

How many cross-over style SUVs offer either air suspension or significant towing?
Very few. I could deal without the troublesome air suspension on my allroad and towing of 3500 lbs is only suitable for small utility trailers, small rec vehicles (boats, motorcycles, snowmachines). An unadjustable coil suspension may be a good compromise...

yeah, but it is a compromise. Our cars are almost no compromise...
I do use the air suspension, quite often. Where I live 12" of snow in a night is not uncommon and my neighborhood does not get plowed. Also, there are several local trail-heads that have pretty gnarly roads leading to them them and the AR always does amazingly well, thanks to the suspension.
And I have a trailer, that I also use quite often. When I bought the AR i sold a coupe an F150. If I were to buy the new B8 allroad (with out the capability to use a trailer) I would need a truck again...
I really love our cars and it's too bad that there is nothing else out that can "do it all".

Understood - even the allroad is a compromise for me
I used to drive an Audi 90 quattro with all-seasons through 12" of unplowed snow without issue. I do run snow tires on my allroad but rarely need to fiddle with the suspension. I run on 2 most of the time and might raise it when dealing with snow banks -- because I can. But I think you'd be surprised at what you can get through without the air suspension.
I need enough towing capacity to handle a racecar and trailer. So there's no expectation that it'll do it all for me. I have to compromise regardless.
A few key purchasing decisions for me:
* comfortably hauls 4 people in all conditions with 2 large dogs in back
* fun to drive - manual transmission + decent powerplant
* solidly built
I doubt the B8 allroad will satisfy the second item, let alone the towing.
