Default Burning smell and thump

Hi Everyone! Its me, your favorite '01 with 135k, still going strong. I can't search the threads anymore so I need some help.
There is a burning smell coming from under the car after being driven at freeway speeds. If anyone has experience with a burning smell, I'd like to know what it was so I can check those things.
The more serious issue is the thump when the auto trans shifts gears. I suspect transmission mounts. Does this involve removing the tranny, or is this something I may be able to do myself?
The trans shifts just fine. Ocassionally though, I get a second, delayed thump when putting it into reverse. At 135k, the trans has never been rebuilt. Some people say they go at 80k, others say they last the life of the car. I'm wondering if new mounts will fix this or if its something more serious. If your trans has gone out, I'd appreciate hearing what the preceding symptoms were.
Thanks and have a great weekend.

Is it a smell of burning oil?

Smell is likely the transmission rear output seal leaking. Common problem, leaks on the cats and stinks.

The thump is probably your 135k mile tranny fluid sucking the remaining life out of your tranny.

Default Trans fluid already changed

The rear prop seal is indeed leaking. The dealer told me about $400 to fix it.
The fluid has been changed. I think the thump that happens each time is a trans mount. I don't know what the second/engagement thump is when putting it into reverse.

If yours is an '01 it could be the torque converter if this has never been redone?

Default I was going to ask the same thing

leaky valve cover and cam cover gaskets will leak right onto the turbos and will give a burning oil smell.
