Default Rear Dome Light

My rear dome light won't come on either with the switch set to on or set to come on with open doors (and having the rear doors open). The rear map lights will come on if they are switched on directly, but they don't come on with the doors.

I'm thinking it's just the bulb. However, the map lights in front come on with the switch in the "Door" setting.

Do your rear map lights come on with the doors open?

Thanks!

Ok, mine doesn't come on either. It's in the 'auto' position, and it works when I turn it on manually (as do the reading lights) but when I open the rear door the overhead rear lights don't come on. I did notice that there is rear footwell lighting which does come on when the rear door is opened.

Check your display between the tach and speedo to see if it sees the back doors are open when they are opened. If so, your door sensors are good and it is your dome light. A lot of times, if you pull it out from the ceiling and unplug it and plug it back in it will work. There is a DIY on cleaning the contacts on the assembly itself. Unplugging and plugging mine back worked like a charm.

I know this is an older post but I just found it and followed the link to the repair. Bingo! Perfect. I'm not sure it will work if the diagnosis is not exactly as explained but mine was and the steps are easy to follow. Now my 2001 A6 Quattro Avant is nearly perfect. Nearly.

Thank you for the thread and PaperToast for the link to the fix!

I just acquired a 2003 Allroad and the link on quattroworld worked perfectly. It was driving me nuts not only that the rear passenger lights weren't coming on when opening the doors, but also that the on switch itself wouldn't work. This solved both problems. Thanks again.
