Default ar 4.2 oil consumption

Is it normal for the 2005 AR 4.2 to burn oil? It has been less than 500 miles since my last service, and I was alerted to a low oil level beep today. My service advisor claims this is normal. Has anyone else had this "normal" experience? Does this mean that I should add oil every few hundred miles?

Default no way is it normal. if you got a 'beep'

When my ar sprung a major leak the light never went off and yet no oil showed on the stick.. most was on the ground.. the tech said the light goes when you are down 3-4 quarts.

You would see smoke if you were burnign and with syn..you would get the smell too. check for leaks. check your dip stick and the level.. you could have a bad sennsor but most likely someone did not put in enough oil.

carboard under the car this evening..

Default don't think that is normal

I had a Touareg V8 with the 4.2L engine, which I think is the same engine as in your car.

Didn't use oil for the first 7000 miles. I then traded it on my AR (had a whole bunch of other problems though with the T-reg)

I bet like others have said they did not put enough oil.... Another advice...you may want to bring your new ar someplace else!!!

Default Drip, drip, drip.

I thought my Passat had an oil-burning problem for 4 years -- until the leak got bad enough I could smell the oil burning off the manifolds when parking in the garage. Never once did a drop make it to the ground. Leak would be my prime suspect.

Default Re: ar 4.2 oil consumption

I am embarrased to say that I actually have kept with the service recommendation and have now gone 8k on a mobile one change but I checked it the other day because I knew how screwed up I was and I was very surprised to see it was still totally full and very clean. I drive mostly highway though.

Default The car also stinks on the highway,

but my dealership can't duplicate this. Perhaps oil is leaking somewhere.
