Yes, I almost bought one off E-Bay (01) with that feature in August. Seems like a nice feature in warm climates where solar heating (the predominantly black interiors) of an allroad (with so much glass) is a problem. From what I understand it is a solar panel in the sun roof that keeps the battery charged so the vent fan can run and draw in fresh air.

Got one on my 2001
My 2001 ar has the solar sunroof. It powers a very low speed fan (hardly detectable). It does a surprisingly decent job. It doesn't necessarily "cool" the inside, but rather circulates the air and draws in fresh outside air. Whatever temp it is outside, is waht you get inside. However, in hot climates, you avoid that unbearable blast of heat that you tend to get in other cars that have sat out in the sun all day.

Had that in my 2001 allroad...mixed opinions on it...
My wife really wanted those rear sunshades built into the windows and the sunroof was part of the package - instead of saying no I said OK - I thought the cooling mechanism was cool, but the novelty of it wore of quickly. Mixed emotion as to how well it worked - I was in Texas at the time so it sure can get hot - the panel did an ok job of at least taming the heat. I missed having a moonroof though and would never get it again IMHO. I believe this is offered now only in the 4.2 version. The feature I liked the best on the 2001 was the heated steering wheel - now thats only on the 4.2 as well. Bummer now that I am looking at a 2004 2.7T and live in the Northeast.

Question on the solar roof
So does it only tilt open then from reading some of the comments? I have also been considering if I would like this option but would want to be able to fully open the panel. I don't really care that I wouldn't be able to see though it provided I had more than just a tilt open option.

It is interesting how difficult is to replace moon roof with solar roof. I am trying to find use for that big whole above my head.
In my case it remains closed every time. It just came standard with premium package -- so there was no choice.
