Default NJ Cracking Down On “Distracted Driving”

WARNING:

New Jersey's annual campaign targeting distracted driving particularly those texting behind the wheel - kicks off Monday with 207 police departments and law enforcement agencies receiving more than $1 million in grants for additional patrols to issue tickets. Washington Township Police will be participating in the event throughout April.

The three-week "U Text. U Drive. U Pay." campaign runs through April 21 and is timed to coincide with National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

1ST Offense $200-$400 fine & mandatory court

2ND Offense $400-$600 fine & mandatory court

3RD Offense $600-$800 fine & possible loss of license

Tickets can be issued for:

•Using a cell phone or smartphone

•Eating and drinking

•Grooming

•Reading

•Using a navigation system

•Watching a video
About Fu+’ing Time! And, why only until the end of April? The cell phone law has been on the book for more than 10 years and it’s so rarely enforced. I think people with pets on their laps, as they’re driving, should be included as well!

Using a navigation system

So if you are following google maps with your phone propped up on the dash in front of you, this is no good? If so, I don't see how its any worse than in dash nav.

Yeah, the "using a nav system" one seems to be misguided

Ontario has recently updated theirs to the following:
  • First conviction:
    • a fine of $615, if settled out of court (includes a victim surcharge and the court fee)
    • a fine of up to $1,000 if a summons is received or if you fight the ticket in court and lose
    • three demerit points
    • 3-day suspension
  • Second conviction
    • a fine of $615, if settled out of court (includes a victim surcharge and the court fee)
    • a fine of up to $2,000 if a summons is received or if you fight the ticket in court and lose
    • six demerit points
    • 7-day suspension
  • Third and any further conviction(s)
    • a fine of $615, if settled out of court (includes a victim surcharge and the court fee)
    • a fine of up to $3,000 if a summons is received or if you fight the ticket in court and lose
    • six demerit points
    • 30-day suspension
While you are driving, including when you are stopped in traffic or at a red light, it is illegal to:
  • use a phone or other hand-held wireless communication device to text or dial – you can only touch a device to call 911 in an emergency
  • use a hand-held electronic entertainment device, such as a tablet or portable gaming console
  • view display screens unrelated to driving, such as watching a video
  • program a GPS device, except by voice commands

I'd like to see something similar implemented in Texas. The cities around here would certainly appreciate a new potential revenue source.

What about a Stunt Driving offense where if you are caught doing 50 kph over (31 mph) over the limit, penalty can be:
  • An immediate seizure of the vehicle involved for 7 days
  • Immediate drivers licence suspension for 7 days
  • a fine between 2,000 and 10,000 dollars
  • possible drivers licence suspension up to 2 years
  • 7 demerit points
  • Dramatic increase in insurance rates

Default Of course that doesn't cover CMP use of dash-mounted laptops.

It's called distracted driving and the LEO's answer to the motorist is 'Tell it to the Judge. Have a nice day."

Yuck, no! There are plenty of places where a highway has a horribly low limit like 55 and everyone is safely doing 85. I drive on these every day and never see an accident.

It seems to me that the vast majority of accidents are due to the cell phone users -- I support that. Calling people doing 85 mph "stunt drivers" with 2 year offenses seems inappropriate, that's just my opinion.
