Transmissions with 7 and 8 gears you will see typically very low rpm's while cruising.

I have an A5 with the 8 speed Tiptronic. I've always been driving it around in Sport mode and the revs were typically at around 2000-2200.

Today I decided to use Drive mode and the revs were very low as mentioned here. At cruising speeds of 50-60kmph, I saw the tach at around 1200. I think I'll drive in this mode when I fill-up next time and see what differences I get kilometer wise on a tank of gas. I've never owned a car that rev'd so low before but then again I've never owned anything with more than 5 speeds (manual or auto)

One thing I've noticed after driving throughout the weekend is that the RPM's typically run between 1000 and 2000 when cruising around the city. My impression is this is quite low. Is this normal with this engine?

Thanks...Mark
Not sure if you have 7 or 8 sp. trans. but either way it produces low rpm unless under acceleration...........reving the engine for speed.
I have the Sport Differential option and can select between Auto., Comfort, Individual, and Dynamic. My S5 Cab. has the 7sp. auto. trans.
Under "Auto." setting the revs. are very low as you describe. This produces very reasonable gas mileage.
With the "Dynamic" setting there is a dramatic difference. The car really comes to life and says "Let's Party" LOL Really responsive with higher average revs, tons of quickness, but lower gas mileage. I really love this option though. With a push of a button you change the entire dynamics of the car's performance.
Good stuff.

Thanks all.

It seems that the behavior of my car is normal...and when I put it in sport mode...it does rev higher and is much peppier.

Appreciate the input. Mark

another thing i noticed is that it seems to hesitate a little longer (less than a second, but still noticeable) starting (if i was to compare it with a car that needs to be started with a normal key, feels like that extra second is where you keep the key turned all the way to the right) the s5 compared to the a4. is this normal as well?

You should expect a little better gas mileage since sport mode usually keeps the car in a little bit of a lower gear for better acceleration. Drive mode simply keeps the car in the highest gear for as long as possible when there isn't a major torque request.

Happy motoring!
