Answer: Go into the playlist, like you said
and you must start playing a song in the playlist. Don't just highlight it. click on it so it plays, then go to Control, then Mix.. use the arrows below the MMI **** and it'll work.

Playlist..
Ok - on the drive home, I figured it out..
Once you are in the ipod interface, go into 'setup' (under 'car' on the left row of buttons) and it will give you an option for 'mix'. Change that to 'list' and you can randomize your playlists.
