UPDATE: Brought her in Wednesday for the phase II portion of the oil consumption test. After two days and a few other tests, it failed. The proposed fix is to replace the pistons. So now I have a small dilemma. I am at 43k miles, my warranty will run out in January, right around the time I would hit 50k miles anyway. I do not plan to keep the car for that long after the warranty runs out. My question is will replacing the pistons impact my ability to sell the car?

I would say it would be better to change the pistons now. The last thing you want to do is try selling a car that burns oil without a warranty.

Do it now. It will not affect the future sale of the car but as fasteddy wrote, you will be in deep kimchee trying to sell a car with bad pistons if you don't.

Agreed. Have it repaired now and you'll be able to drive it a while and document that it is repaired before warranty runs out. If you trade later it likely wont affect trade in value. Good luck. I wonder if they diagnose cylinder wall scoring. Some reports of that in Porsches.

Quick update, I decided to have the pistons changed out under warranty last November. The repair went well, the gas mileage went down for the first few tanks but now back to normal. My regular warranty ran out last week, but the warranty on the engine got extended by 12 months from last November.

Now that the main warranty is up I have the itch for something new. Always liked the S6, really like the new 540/M550 (at least from the pictures I have seen). And of course I have to wait until the new S5 comes out before I can really decide anything!! My kids are now 4 years older than they were when I bought the S5 Cab and they don't fit in it as well as they used to so I may need to go up to a 4 door!

Look at the new S5 Sportback. If it isn't big enough, there is always the S7.
