Default A5 2.0T vs VW GTI 2.0T

I am currently driving a GTI with the 2.0T engine. I want more power and is looking at an A5 but don't know how the 2.0T engine holds up on the A5. I notice there's more torque and an extra 11hp compared to the GTI's 2.0T. However, the A5 is heavier than the GTI also. So anyone finds the 2.0T on the A5 a little bit underpower? or is it just right?

Thanks.

The extra torque makes a big difference and, if you are getting an auto, so does the new 8-speed tiptronic. I was actually surprised how much faster my car feels compared to a 2010 A4 loaner with a 6-speed tip.

The A5 foes not feel underpowered at all IMO.

A FWD "hot hatch" vs. an elegant Quattro Coupe of course.

"Torque does the work but horsepower gets the credit."

The extra torque makes a very big difference. The power is there when you need it most, and not overly consuming fuel when you don't.

I agree; the 2.0T is very responsive and with the 8-speed tiptronic has more than enough power and torque to exceed in any real traffic situation. Maybe not if you want to go up against 500 hp beasts, but…

Great, good to know. I just want to make sure cause the GTI I have does have a sluggish feeling occasionally due to turbo lag and the heavy weight of the car.

Turbo lag (or rather the lack thereof) is what makes the 8-speed so great. Because there are so many gears, each gear is short, so the engine revs up quickly and is pretty much always on boost.

I see. So are they using the dual clutch gearbox or just the ones with the torque converter?

The current 8-speed automatic in the A5 is the Tiptronic which is a very good, but traditional setup. The S4 employs the advanced anticipatory dual-clutch S-Tronic.

Yep, the extra torque in the A5 does make a big difference and for me the car does not feel underpowered at all. Honestly the power is perfect for the car. I had a 2007 GTI as well in the past. The A5 definitely feels like it has more poke but the extra weight means it probably isn't any quicker...but it's quick enough. I love the 2.0T in the A5.....fantastic little powerplant.
