Default Audi S5 vs. BMW 435i: The Shocking Truth

Just got my copy of April's Car and Driver in the mail today. And right on top is this headline.

It's not out yet on their website but should be shortly.

A gist of the article goes like this:

BMW 435i
+Intriguing and artfully detailed styling, isolation chamber ride.

-Feels distant, the only pricier stripper is the one who phones your wife.

=BMW is going soft on its old priorities, just as others are zeroing in.

Audi S5
+ Burly engine, engaging chassis.

-Lumpy seats, styling that's growing awfully familiar.

=Audi stays on the right side of the line between insulation and isolation.

"We never thought we'd see the day when we preferred a supercharged V-6 to a BMW inline-six or, for that matter, a four wheel drive to rear-drive, but we never thought we'd see dogs speak, either, and there are millions of such videos on YouTube. Audi's blown six is so responsive that it exposes a microsecond of lag you'd otherwise never notice in the 435i's engine."

Final results: Audi S5 216, BMW 435i 207. Nuff said!

Thanks for the info, can't wait to see the full article, too bad for BMW they are loosing sight of what has always made them a little better. Others are catching up and surpassing them now.

I saw that article too. Interesting were the 0-60 and 1/4 times (both cars were manuals):

S5: 4.6, 13.2 @ 107
435: 5.2, 13.7 @ 105

I say interesting because the S5 time is pretty quick for a manual (most other reviews have it at 4.8+) and the 435 time is on the slow side. Anyone know where the S5 S-tronic fits in there?

The '07-'10 335i (with the twin-turbo N54 sixer) didn't seem to have any problems getting a sub 5-sec 0-60. A buddy at work used to have an '09 335i and that thing was ridiculously fast... he got rid of it before I got my S5 but it didn't feel slower, that's for sure.

The S5 is more expensive than the 435xi, difference is about $5,000. So, the S5 MUST offer more otherwise it would not make sense to buy an S5. May people, especially younger ones prefer a 335/435i as it is cheaper than the S5.

Not so sure...Here's why:

This comparison was between the 435i (rear wheel drive) with the M Sport package. Which includes firmer dampers, springs and anti-roll bars. $1k Dynamic handling package adds variable-ratio steering and adjustable dampers. $1900 in lighting upgrades and $2200 premium pack with Sat radio and keyless entry and start. In Estoril Blue...Totaling $57,225

The Audi was $59,220 with the added option of rear diff and Estoril Blue.

The 435ix four wheel drive with the same options as the comparo above would seem like a push with the Audi further outperforming a now heavier 4WD.

Base prices are S5 $52,895...BMW 435i $46,925
