Simple math would indicate it's simply 1 free map update every 6 months whether you take advantage of it or not, hence 2.5 years or 30 months. Like the other person noted, I would have done the same by spreading out the updates over a longer period of time if it didn't matter. Yeah if it's going to be $400 for a freaking single update that is indeed insane! I mean a $100 Garmin has LIFETIME map updates for free!!
If it's specified on Audi's website that there's a 2.5 year time frame, then yeah you get 2.5 years. All I could find when I logged onto the MyAudi site was:

"You can download and install the updates an unlimited number of times. The Map Update includes the first five updates to the version of the map installed at the factory. The updates are issued every six months."

I think the key is "the first 5 updates to the version installed at the factory". So 2.5-3 years, depending on when you took delivery vs when map updates were released.

Side note: I have/had a Garmin with 'free lifetime updates' but eventually (in my case in less than 2 years) the updates > memory capacity of the Garmin. You either have to download regions or (if an option) use an SDCard for the updates.

In response to the OP's thread title, yes, many Audi owners use one or more Audi Connect features. After 4+ years of AC use and moderating many threads on the subject across all the AW forums, my grandmother survey indicates that about 3 out of 4 owners with access to AC in their Audis subscribe to the service after the trial period, one way or the other.

My trial period expires this week and I'm still confused on how the system works? If I add on to my existing AT&T plan, but don't pay the the $399 for the Audi Connect Prime plan, I won't get traffic updates, google earth overlays, weather, news, fuel price information? What exactly does the Connect Plus Plan enable in the car? Is it just the in-car wifi?

That's correct. The Connect Plus plan is actually a supplemental plan. The Connect Prime plan enables all the Audi connect features and includes 6GB of Wifi hotspot data. Once you exhausted the 6GB you can add additional Wifi hotspot data via one of the Connect Plus plans.

At least that's 6GB a month, right? I probably would never exceed that and now that I understand how this works, I doubt I would ever subscribe to Connect Plus. I simply want the standard Google Earth overlays with my Nav functions and the occasional updates whether it be news or other.

No, that's 6GB total. Depending on the package you purchased, it's either 6GB/6 months = 1GB/month average or 6GB/18 months = 333MB/month average.

Ouch! In that case that's not very good.
