Why is it so hard to buy an A3??
I was all set to buy an A3 last month. I had done alot of research, talked to current owners, and was excited to do a deal. I thought an A3 would have made a great compliment to my TT Roadster.
I could not believe how much difficulty I had even talking about an A3 with the Audi dealers. In the minute or 2 I was able to talk about the A3, they talked down on the "quality", described how financing terms and resale were horrible, and did everything they could to steer me to an A4.
It kind of turned me off Audi... In the end, I ended up buying the new 2007 Infiniti G35 AWD sedan for a lot less than the 2.0T A4 Q.
I guess I'll have to get my A3 fix during local Audi GTG's. See you guys there

So let me get this straight. You were set on the A3...
The salesperson tried to sell you something more expensive(what a shock) and you let it sour you on the car. In spite of the research you had done you let that sway you. Are you sure you didn't just want the Infinity to begin with?

Not really. I had been planning to buy an A3 in Nov. since this summer. I actually had not even sat in the G35 until after the Audi sales experience.

My service tech at McKenna Audi said he is not impressed with the A4 compared to the A3
No offence to the A4 guys. I have read reviews that say the fit and finish in the A3 interior is better then higher modles in the line. So I guess in this case beauty is in the eye of the beholder or in the pocket book of the salesman.

Lack of subventing means there are also fewer profit centers for the dealer with the A3 - as well as
smaller margins. Say the factory is offering the dealer 4% interest. They might pass it along to you, adding 1/2% onto the rate for themselves, thus making a bit more. With the A3, there is no subventing to be had, so the dealer has to sell the car as a stand-alone item, and people are usually inclined to leave very little margin for the dealer on base model cars.
Frankly I think one of the reasons that A3 sales haven't picked up even more, is that dealer enthusiasm is very low for these cars. It takes the same work to sell either car. Can't blame them if they have other cars that can make them more money, but it's sad in any case.
