Roof rails...Audi will not factory install them for a US A3
I have been working with the dealer and printed out the information on how to get roof rails ordered from this forum (thanks). My dealer has been working for a month with Audi of North America and yet the folks in Germany keep saying no can do.
From an email sent to me by the dealer: (quote)
Ok. Audi has finally gotten an official answer. They will not add them at the factory in Europe for a US Spec car. They say it is unavailable. We can do a special order through our parts department which will be facilitated by Audi of North America and we can get either the Black or the Silver roof rails.
Those are the options Audi has outlined for us. I checked with my service department to inquire about integrity of the roof once the rails are installed. They laughed.....apparently there is a black strip of plastic that you pull up like weather stripping and it exposes a track which the roof rails simply lock into and they take the place of the black weatherstripping. (end quote)
So we will get the car and just add the roof rails at the dealer. We orginally planned to pick up the car at the factory but several dealers said they could beat the price of Euro delivery if we just ordered it and picked it up at their dealership.

Don't accept that as gospel - check it out.
'06 - '08 A3's require extensive drilling and work to install the roof rails - including removal of interior trim and headliner. I haven't seen the newer cars, so maybe this has changed. I would want this verified
Maybe the ordering has changed, too. I had no problem getting them on the '07 I ordered, but the dealer didn't have a clue. I had to walk them through it step by step.

2nd that. I just looked at ETKA for an 07, and there are obviously fasteners and such
that would need to be installed from inside, i.e. the headliner would have to come out.
Parts plate 860-50, which shows the roof rails, would be of interest.

Re: Roof rails...Audi will not factory install them for a US A3
I have a both 2009 and a 2008 A3 and I can assure you that the installation is simply not the removal of a black plastic strip.
You will need to drill holes and remove the headliner inside the car. The roof rails mount next to the plastic strip and do not replace it.
If the dealer has agreed to do this on your behalf, you are in luck, but I suspect they don't know what they are in for

i know there is a special order code that has to be put in with the order and the rails get put right on in your choice of black or aluminum...i have black rails on my avus silver 3.2

3S1 for silver and 3S2 for black...
Unless it has changed since I ordered my '07. And I would definitely have it done at the factory or not at all. My dealer was clueless about this too, you have to tell them the special order code.

Me too, on my 08.
The search function is not working for me right now, but if you search "roof rails" you should find some posts by me enquiring about them and you can find the actual order code to give to your dealer to plug into the system. It won't show up on their computers under the normal Options screen. My dealer had no clue until I printed out the info and showed it to them.
Now Audi *may* have just recently changed their policy, but I kinda doubt it.
