Default I like heel/toe. Was very good at it with my Miata. The thing I really miss is lack of engine

braking on downshift. But this is endemic to the engine, not the type of transmission.

The A3 manual is floppy with long throws from what I was use to, so I passed.

My test drive with both the manual and DSG was the backroads between Livermore/Pleasanton and Danville. Some very tight twisty's that the salesman and I were familiar with. In fact, when I turned off 580 onto Tassaraja, he laughed a little and said "you know your backroads", and it was ON. Best test drive I've ever had. I drove the DSG first and it just stuck with me. The manual not so much.

To each his/her own. The question will never be resolved really....

Default Don't forget there is a sport option w DSG

If more torque is what you want, shift to that option on the DSG. In terms of auto v. stick, it really depends how you drive, where you drive, and how much stop and go you do. I had a Healey and loved driving it along winding, country roads but if you are in crowded urban traffic downshifting and hoping you can engage the clutch before you tap the guy on your rear bumper at a light -- hey, this can get to be a real bother.
