to run a staggered setup (although some people have). This is my first FWD car. This might be a stupid question but since technically the different width tires shouldn't have any adverse affects on the alignment or suspension geometry on a FWD car, it couldn't hurt to run wider rears. I know theoretically you could run wider fronts for better handling on FWD cars but that would look retarded. Could the wider rears help in handling or would it just accentuate the understeer inherent in a FWD car by planting the rear even more? Would wider fronts actually help more for the understeer?

Default I see it done on lot's of GTI's at home, a few A3's have done it also.

I certainly don't think it's going to HELP handling, but don't have any experience or know enough to really comment. Most that do it do it for looks.
IIRC there was a black A3 posted on fourtitude with staggered bbs wheels that looked great...there's been a few others also. The tough thing will be getting the correct offset so you don't rub.
That and there will always be a few people who will mock you for putting wider wheels on the back of a fwd car.

Default Your car will understeer even more. Audi ran/runs wider tires up front even in awd cars

when allowed by various racing bodies. Wider tires up front mean more grip which means less plowing.

Wider tires on one end of the car traditionally signify those are the driven wheels, and it's a functional choice to get more grip to the ground. When all those wheels do is hold the car up off the ground, it looks rather silly IMHO. Purely a style choice at the expense of handling.

Exactly. Rear staggered wheels on AWD/FWD makes it obvious to others that you are a fool.

Default I kinda figured it might understeer more. That was the argument for people who wanted a staggered..

quattro setup. Wider FRONTS might help but again would look incredibly stupid on the street.
