Default anyone using chains?

snow tires are overkill for me and spike spiders are freakin expensive.

the manual says not to use chains, but some have. any success? what kind? what size tire?

i just need them for the occasional weekends for snowboarding.

Default Clearance at the back of the wheels can be an issue. Look for Spiders on craigslist

or consider buying Autosocks?

http://www.tirerack.com/accessories/autosock/autosock.jsp

You should consider the Nokian WRs (All-Season Plus) on a set of winter rims.

Default been using daily for the last week....

keep it under 25 mph, and they are slick (as in work well). I've had no rubbing issues, and car runs awesome...

they take about 2 minutes to put on...work well if you only need to use occasionally...

I have stock 17's.

if you're just going up to the mountains, and not on back roads...you should be set with a good set of snow tires...

cops think all audi's are quattros, and let you go by without chains all the time.

Default have you used these?

would be a much nicer ride than chains. but it seems that those are more for summer tires in the rare case you encounter bad roads (as they state) I would think heading up into the mountains with those on bad roads could get ugly....

whereas chains allow you to 4-wheel with a 2-wheel drive vehicle...

just depends on where you're going and how often you're going there i guess.

Default We live in Cali and usually rent a Subaru for ski trips (because rocks chips and cleaning

are no fun). That's going to change now that we have the RS. It's been clear bra'd and is getting a set of dedicated snows for ski trips.

However, I have talked to some people with VWs who have used Spiders, and absolutely love them. The Chrysler dealer across from where I used to work would install them on the minivans as there was no clearance at the back of the front wheels either. The Autosock is new on the market here this year. It's been out a few years in Europe it appears.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8TemOZoVd2Y</a
