Strange how the article says that it's stealing sales from Japanese faithful owners. I think it because the Hondas and Toyota pries have finally creeped upto the Audi price tag and owners are liking the new face lifts of the Audi as compared to the bland Japanese cars.

I think it's more that Audi prices have come down.
The A3 sedan today is $30k.
It's about the same physical size as the B5, or even B6 A4 sedans, which were more expensive in their day (even in todays money).
Considering the quality and technology improvements over the years, todays A3 is a bargain by comparison!

The MSRP of my A4 B6, 2005 model was $32,220 in Nov., 2004. That included the sport package, which meant low profile tires, and the Premium package, which included the sunroof, Homelink (n/a in the new A3), leather, power driver's seat, info display; and the lighting package, which gave me Xenon headlamps, auto dimming rear mirror, compass, and auto headlights.

US$32,220 in 2004 is equivalent to $40,577 today, according to the US gov't inflation index calculator.
