If you look in the Owner's Manual it will probably say you need to run an oil meeting 502.00...
There will be no 5W20 oils meeting 502.00.
The German cars still tend to favor heavier oils AKA 5W40, etc.

It also depend where you live.
Im in socal, LA, there is no low temperature (ie <32F)
With normal use, a good 10w-40 should be fine, for hard use go for a 10w-50/15w-50. Redline are very good oils and from California.

Lubro-moly MoS2 10-40 seems to last the longest and not get consumed.
Tried their 5-40 synthetic in the A6 (2.8) and it has already sucked down a qt in 1K miles.
Must be too damn slippery.
