Starting an engine for the first time in 5 years
Hello all,
I just picked up a ('91) coupe quattro that hasn't been run (or moved) in 5 years. (To get it on the trailer we had to remove the rear brakes which had seized to the rotors and will now and forever be one piece) Some of you may have seen it on redditt under my name twowwwerf.
Anyway, I'd like to get some advice from some older gearheads on what to consider before cranking over. Here is what I've thought up so far:
Electrical/Ignition:
New Battery
New Plugs (inspect for water in cylinders during replacement)
New Wires
Fuel:
Drain Fuel Tank (Previous owner says it is empty - we'll see)
Acid wash fuel tank depending on sediment in what comes out
Replace Fuel Filter
Check Fuel Pump condition while out of the vehicle (replace if necessary)
Inspect all fuel lines (Will also prime system before attempting to start)
Add Fresh gas
Air:
Clean/Replace Air filter
Check all passage ways for Mice nesting
Check Throttle Body for proper movement/function
General:
Clean and inspect engine bay
Check if motor will turn over by wrench smoothly
Inspect and replace engine belts as needed
Check oil level & quality (Should this automatically be replaced?)
Check Coolant level and quality (Should this be automatically replaced?)
Check various engine sensor wires for continuity
Can anyone recommend anything else? Is any of this redundant/unnecessary? All input is greatly appreciated!

replace oil before trying to start is a must in this situation!!
i would also pull the spark plugs and drop some oil in to each cylinder. i usually fill a small cap from a bottle for each cylinder in keep the plugs off, this way you lube the inside of the cylinder (so nothing locks up) and while you crank without plugs, your oil pump has a chance to build some oil pressure

When the plugs are out, more than just a drop or two of oil, I recommend, there may be rust on the cylinder above the rings, ideally you could let a penetrant like PB Blaster in there to assist with any stuck rings, for a day then add oil from the cranck case…I would drive it 500 miles and change the oil again.
I agree, I would crank it over till oil pressure was achieved with the plugs out, with fresh oil only. This saves the compression against con rod bearings that might be dry and helps everything else from a 5 year dry condition.
I would also consider a thermostat. Cheap insurance and they fail closed I suspect you know.

So for a process I'm thinking:
Drain oil, change filter, fill oil
Pull Plugs and Wires
spray in some wd-40 or PB into each cylinder - let sit overnight?
add a bit of oil into each cylinder
Pull fuel pump relay
turn engine over for a bit to give the oil pump a chance
insert fuel pump relay
new plugs and wires
Give it a try!?
