Default Frozen starter...

So... car has been inside a warm garage for 2 weeks (new clutch, bunch of other things). Drove 500km home last night. Came out this morning to go to work... *click*... nothing.

Barely any audible noise. Wasn't till I start smacking the starter with a hammer that I was able to hear a tick. And even then it wasn't very loud. From the voltage drop, it was obvious that power was being drawn when trying to start.

Power at main connection and at trigger wire.

Brought it inside, let it sit on the floor for an hour... and tested with some jumper cables and the battery. Now it seems to work fine. Motor spins, solenoid fires.

So I'm guessing moisture buildup of some sort. But... it's -20C outside... if I go put it back in the car, is it just gonna freeze again???

Oh... did I mention I pulled it while lying in the snow... on a -22C morning?

Default What shape is the braided wire from solenoid to starter in?

Mine went from easy start to no start when that wire rotted through. When I put it on the bench it worked fine but just because I smashed the braid back together.

Default Everything looks fine...

and if it's hooked up properly, it now seems to work. Figure it had moisture in it that froze the solenoid and prevented it from firing... preventing the starter from getting any power.

With a set of jumper cables... grounded the starter, +ve to the main power input on the solenoid (just like it would be in the car), then a +ve wire to the solenoid input... Starter jumps to life, solenoid fired, etc.

I just don't want to put it back in if it's gonna freeze. Think I'll throw it in the freezer to see if it freezes again.

The drive home last night was very cold and very moist... snow, moisture hanging in the air freezing to the car, fogged up windows.
