Kneale, do you think a lean condition in that cyl. could have caused the exhaust valve head to break free? Some of the cyl & piston damage looks like it was from the loose valve head.

Just my guess that some extra air made the burn temperature so hot it melted some of the material in the piston and in the valve. Top of the piston sure looks like it got extra hot in the pix. Could have been burned piston part trying to go through the valve that broke the valve. Do you know whether it was an intake or an exhaust valve?
