Type 44 variations in China
<center><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_okudL0tv3c8/SQ3Nri-5S4I/AAAAAAAACKQ/EWkRyTXVxVs/s288/PA260905.JPG"></center><p>Hi everyone,
I just got back from a two week vacation in China. I put some pictures of the various Type 44s that I saw at the link below.
They've got a V8 style hood that fits on a 100 (non-turbo) style Type 44. I think that market is where the non-turbo H4 eurolights from Depo are for, since they drive on the right side of the road like the U.S. and the Depo lights are in production.
The more I think about it, I want to import some of those V8 style hoods and grills to sell here to interested folks.
Back here at home, I bought a stone gray 200q20v that I'm going through fixing stuff on. I replaced the radiator and the right DOT headlight. The instrument cluster is messed up and I just had the dealer order the parts for the Bose recall campaign. I don't think I'm getting quite the boost response I'm supposed to, but it does reach 1.6 bar indicated eventually in 5th on the freeway. The 3-4k WOT test gets to I think 1.5 bar or so.
It failed smog the first time, but the gas was very old from sitting for a long time so I'm getting rid of that, changed the oil and plugs, am running some Seafoam in it, and will change the oil again before retesting. I expect it should pass next time. I may run 87 octane in it for the test if it may help.
Once I get this one sorted, I plan to use the working example to help me troubleshoot the pearl one I picked up a while back that won't start.<ul><li><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/auditude/ChinaTripAutosAndOtherTransportation#">Audis and cars in China</a></li></ul>

FAW (Red Flag) manufactured Type 44's - Paging Paul Fernandes......
Paul has a page on his site (Custom Auto Craft)about Chinese Type 44's. Don't know if it would be more financially adventageous to import V8 hoods (when you can find one on www.car-part.com for cheap)....or make a carbon fibre V8 hood locally. Chances are the US-spec "Audi" and the Red Flag one were built in the same factory.....the Audi branded one would have been made when they had the license to produce Audis.
The build up of Tantrum was inspired by stuff on Paul's site:

I couldn't tell if they were the same or different, but I didn't think the Chinese ones were the same as the V8 ones. It sounds like you're saying that that's all they are.
I thought that V8 headlights are different than non-turbo 5000/100 headlights. Is that incorrect, and they are the same?

<center><img src="http://sites.internet.lu/folders/paulfern/faw/Audi_C3_V6_100.jpg"></center><p>Hi guyes...Gals too,
So we still keep getting people which are "just" finding out about the the Chinese Audi connection.
GOOOOODDD>....very good, we all need to investigate and research more.
OK as far the the Audi and RED flag thing goes here is some more info..
Red Flag is a car company wholey owned by FAW (first Auto works)
FAW is in turn Partially owned by no other then VW!!!!
The audi 100 was sent to China around 1987-88 under agreement with Vw and China to be built under license from VW-Audi.
Audi first built the Audi 100 and later the Audi 200 models ...the motors varied I have all this information on my third webs-site ...see the link below..
NO QUATTROS were built in china!...in type 44 or typeC4 chassis.
Audi ...Upps..sorry FAW still make them today and in several sizes and disgises...see also the link below.
For those that wanted to see what does the engine bay look like...here is also a picture from the web-site..this was an Audi 200 2.6 V6...Yes an Audi engine...<ul><li><a href="http://sites.internet.lu/folders/paulfern/FAW-story.htm">the FAW AUDI STORY...</a></li></ul>

Noticed few has changed, I was considering about 2years ago about importing one o fthese over and ...imagine a NEW audi 100...2007 model year!!! Blew my mind...
Only problem was they still do not offer the quattro versions.

some differences...
Oh yes some more details..about headlights.
OK this maybe a shocker to all..here goes..
the Audi V8 and the Audi 200 headlight inner reflector are the same...!!! No heart attachs?? good.
Next...
the Audi 200 and the Aston martin vanatage are the same headlights....All still alive!!! Good..
NExt..
The Chinese Audi 100 and 200 cars all had the same headlights and spec as the Euro cars.
This means all the pictures you have seen are Euro headlights.
For costs reasons however Audi took off the level adjusters on the C3 and C4 cars in China...but could be retrofitted...IF anyone knew how....Every one still OK??.. Good.
Next...
The Audi 200 in China was equipped with a V8 look alike hood..it looks and seems the same..in fact they are the same...only very small changes the Chinese implemented.
The headlights from the 100 and the V8 have aproximatly the same outlines..therefore the V8 hood fit well with the 100 headlights. This was an "instant" facelift for the Chinese around 1996-1997 when the 200 was being considered for revamp.

Re: some differences...
Paul, how about the Chinese front bumper? Are they the same as the V8? They don't appear to be, and I'm wondering if they work with the non-V8 style frame rails, which I understand are shorter.
Sounds like some euro style 100 headlights, a V8 hood and grill, and Chinese style front bumper might be a workable setup to update the hood of a 200 while incorporating eurolights.
I had seen the FAW info online, but seeing the stuff in person, and all the Type 44's in general over there, both Audi and FAW, got me thinking about why there hasn't been any progress or activity in this area for a while.
My mother speaks mandarin Chinese and I speak very little, but if there was interest we could work on establishing some connections for these things. One of the ideas for the trip was to keep an eye out for possible business opportunities.

Re: Type 44 variations in China
Thanks for the pixs, and latest Chinese offering of Audi and VWs. I keep hearing that China will enter the US auto market in 2009-10. I wonder if any of these Audi knock offs will be in the mix?
My daughter is going to college in Hong Kong at the moment. She said that she has not seen any of the cars pictured in Hong Kong, but will keep an eye out for them.

I find this REALLY neat
Reminds me of the article I saw a few years ago about Mk1 or Mk2 Golf's still being built somewhere in Africa or something. Basically a parts bin car made from 80's parts but all brand new.
Now if there was a quattro version THAT would be something else, and perhaps a 4kq, or Urq that was new built today
Still I find this pretty darn cool.
