Default New to Audi, picked up a 1991 200TQ

Well consider this a formal introduction thread. I am picking up my dad's dream car when he was about my age - A 1991 200 Turbo Quattro sedan with the 5-speed manual and pretty much all the options. It has higher mileage at 250k miles but it has pretty substantial records at audi dealerships and is from the south so no rust. Zero. I checked.

It has a few mods already and the brakes were converted to a more conventional disc setup. THe lowering seems to have been done properly and the car has only minor squeaks over larger bumps. The exhaust and wastegate have been modified but it looked and sounded professionally done. I couldn't find the receipts for it but judging by the condition of the muffler it couldn't have been more than two or three years old at most.

I got all of this for the low price of $1200

Amazing what you can pick up when a retired man is cleaning up his garage. He apparently got it as part of repayment for bailing his friend out of a tight spot. He drove it but didn't care for it at his age and so I now have it. Here's hoping it stays in good order for a while. The high mileage worries me a little bit but at this price and in this condition, I can't really lose. Even if the engine blows, the body and chassis are in great shape. Pics are below. The paint has a lot of surface scratches but I'm a pretty talented detailer so I should be able to get that out with ease.

Audi's I5 engines are pretty much bulletproof. It's the wear items like clutch, suspension, bearings that require replacement most often. Lots of these cars have surpassed 300K miles.

M105 and M205 will be your best friend on that paint. Try Meguiars burgundy pads with the 105 followed by yellow with the 205. Nice find, those engines are indeed bulletproof. Mine has 225,000 on it and it's still going strong.

Yeah, I have a bunch of compound and cleaners from my other cars. I have some real nice fine cut cleaner that really got the blemishes out of my riviera.

I'll hopefully have it home tomorrow afternoon and be able to take some detail shots. I'm curious if there are upgraded struts too or just the lowering springs. I didn't look at it closely enough when I put a deposit on it last night.

In my experience, the paint on these cars is pretty hard, so I doubt you'll be able to get much correction with anything fine-cut. However, your paint pay be different (softer) than mine, and perhaps it will respond well. I spent about six hours just compounding with 105 on my car last weekend, and I still couldn't get out the deeper RIDS. I think total time I spent was about ten hours, just on the outside! Definitely post up some post-detail shots, I look forward to seeing them :-)

Default cut/polish paint

This was my results of using a 3M paint cut product this week. I applied by hand, wiped off and then sealed it after with three coat of quality wax also by hand, The left side of the trunk is the final result and the right side of the trunk is the original.

There won't be any pics tonight as I have been busy all today preparing to move across the state but I got it in the storage lot at my college for now until I can get it titled and insured properly. Pics will be tomorrow during commercial breaks of Le Mans.

I have to tip my hat to the previous owners. The car is incredibly solid. The pedals all had good feel and were consistent. I learned how to drive a manual driving it around in the parking lot and it was very easy to do. The interior is incredible and the only electrical issues are the rear windows don't work and the A/C needs to be converted or recharged, I don't know which.

The only major issues I have are as follows

1) The valve cover gasket has a small leak at one of the corners. It's not too bad and since it's the inline 5, removal seems straight forward unlike the transverse-V6s I'm used to in my old GM cars.
2) THe turbo makes a bit of noise one I back off the throttle. It rattles a little bit. It generates proper boost but the noise can't be good. Will look into it once I get it in a garage.
3) The car smokes a little at idle and after revving it. One of my friends thinks it might be the turbo seals but another is saying piston rings. Given #2, I am leaning towards turbo but once again, we will see.

All in all, a great 1200$. The car has very few squeaks or rattles. The brakes were converted to what appear to be the S4 brakes. THey really fill up the wheels. I'll measure it once I get the wheels off. But the UFOs are gone! The exhaust and wastegate sound awesome! It is loud but there is no drone and the wastegate is not obnoxious or excessive. There is also a heat shielded intake. It is pretty simple (will take picture of it tomorrow) but it was at least thought out. All in all, the car has been modded well. Whoever did it either had it professionally done or knew what they were doing and thought it out. The radiator is in great shape (maybe only a few years old) and I got a new coolant reservoir to install since the old one oxidized pretty badly and sprung a small leak from a crack.

That's definitely a marked improvement, however using some compound with a rotary buffer would not only produce better results, but also be a lot easier on your hands :-)

I've been on the fence about buying one mostly due to lack of funds and the only unit I've seen that seems worth buying is a $129.00 porter cable from Lowes. I purchased a cheap one from Walmart for work last year and what a POS, wound up buffing a entire work van by hand...never again (Buying a cheap buffer that is).
