Default My alternator belt saga may have been resolved

I love the 110 Amp alternator that I added to my car, but its body is a little larger diameter than the 90 Amp alternator that it replaced, and I've had a heck of a time finding an alternator belt that fit "just right".

My last belt, an American-made inch-dimensioned thing, flung itself from my car last night. Today I replaced it with a 10 mm x 825 mm Conti-tech V-belt that's supposed to fit a Porsche 912. (When's the last time you saw or even heard of one of THOSE?) The belt is readily available from distributors such as WOrldpac. It's not listed as fitting our cars, but it does fit mine (so far).

It fits very snugly in the pulley's grooves and with barely a millimeter to spare between the alternator's air cooling duct and the large boss that's cast as part of the engine block . . . but IT DOES FIT!

I'll report back as I put miles on this new belt. It just may be the answer that I've been searching for.

Is this the one, where you have spun heaps of belts off ?

Could never understand that, surely tensioning it correctly, would stop that.

No, this saga involves my pursuit of the correct belt size.

According to ETKA, my car, as well as later 100s and 200s (even with the 110 Amp alternator) left the factory with a 9.5 x 820 mm alternator v-belt. Today, most parts distributors deliver a 11.2 x 820 mm v-belt. If you examine the belt in place, you'll see that the 11.2 mm wide v-belt rides high in the pulleys' grooves. Also, on my car, the replacement belt is too short: the 110 Amp alternator's cooling duct interferes with a seemingly vestigial cast iron boss that's part of the engine block casting.

I'd cut off the offending boss, but I've been told that that boss and its machined hole are used to align boring machinery to machine the block's main bearinga, etc. So, while chances are good that the boss would never be missed, it might be a good idea to leave it intact.

Yes, I've had a couple alternator v-belts part ways with the car, but it's happened only with odd-sized belts such as the one that just ran away from home.

The new 10 x 825 mm belt is working fine, so far. I like the way that it seems to be a snug fit in the pulleys' grooves.

How is the belt holding up? I lost my alt belt belt on my 89 100 on a trip from Boston to Georgia, this is after I changed all belts before leaving. I ended up at a Firestone in NC. where they replaced the belt (after 3 freeking hours). The belt started to squeel the other morning so i went under and tightened it up a little. Now again a few day later I can hear it starting to make a little noise. Alt and crank pulley appear to be in good shape but i do not like how high the belt rides on the alt pulley.
