Well, the radiator in my 87 Audi 5000Q has developed a hole in it and I assumed that it would be a straightforward re/re but I am stumped. The radiator extends almost all the way to the left fender and then there is the hydraulic pump on the other side.

So, how do you take these things out? Do you need to remove the hydraulic (power steering) pump, hoses off and all or is there a special trick to it.

Book time according to Alldata is just 1.7 hours so I am hoping it is the latter.

I replaced mine on my 200q20v by loosening the pump and pivoting it as far passenger direction as possible. Then worked it a bit, it came out, not easily, but it did. Getting it in was tough too. I think, ultimately, pump removal would make it a snap.

There is also one 13 mm nut and possibly two 10 mm nuts at the bottom. No need to disconnect the pump hoses, just disconnect the pump from its bracket (next to the cylinder head) (13MM)) and the belt (13mm) and follow the other directions.

Easy job,

one nut on the bottom, a few up top.

To give more room, just slacken the power steering pump adjustment and move to side OR take all the adjustments and back plate off (don't disconnect the hoses) and move to side or out of way.

disconnect all the radiator hoses, take care with the little hose connection on top of radiator (easily breakable). Disconnect fan wires and unbolt the radiator taking the fan out too.

Fairly straight forward though sometimes the bottom nut is fun to find, you may have to remove some splash guard or whatever that stuff is underneath.

Thanks everyone. I finally got it out.
Unbolted the p/s pump and tilted it out of the way. Also there were three bolts at the bottom, one 13mm and two 10mm.
Off to a rad shop tomorrow to see if they can re-core it for less than the cost of a new one...

I wouldn't re-core the radiator. The plastic end tanks are the weak point and will deteriorate and become brittle with age. I got an ALL metal one from a friend who works at a radiator shop.

Good choice on the all metal one, after going through two rads on my 5ktq over the years I just did the all metal unit and no issues.
