Default Hard shifting when cold

My '90 200TQ will not engage in gears until the engine is warm, the shifting is very smooth. This happens usually early in the morning after siting for like 8-10 hours. What do I need to check ? thanks.

Default Check diff fluid level and maybe change it out...

Make sure to use a GL-4 fluid, debate is still out, but supposedly GL-5 eats away the synchros.

Default I was told GL-5 eats them away due to the Sulfur content

My car shifts hard when cold too and the fluid is only a few months old. I'm using Redline MT-90.

I just deal with it.

Default It could be the clutch.

And not the tranny. I find in extreme cold, my clutch pedal sticks or is much harder to press.
Maybe your clutch isn't fully disengaging and you can't shift gears properly.
I'm running Redline MT-90 as well, and seem to shift fine.
Once warmed up, all operations are normal, clutch pedal loosens up.

Default I switched along with Dan to Redline MT-90...

I had Mobil 1 in there from a previous owner and was worried about it's GL5 rating. So last summer me and Dan switched it over to Redline.

I noticed a slightly smoother engagement.

It shifts a bit better at colder climates IMHO.

I was told Redline MTL would be a little better in cold climates as it was lighter but I went with the MT-90 anyways...

Default IMO, don't use MTL, stick with MT-90.

A lot of folks that used MTL in Honda manuals ended up having excessive bearing wear. It was suspected it didn't have the EP wear additives to protect the bearings. Some used a 50/50 mix of MTL and MT-90 and didn't suffer the same failures.
Given the greater loads of our quattro trannies and transfer cases, MTL should do worst.

Default I went with a 50/50 blend of MT-90 & Shockproof Light

RockinV8Q suggested this for a street car, works very well in subzero temps, very light shifter feel.

Default That was my thinking and that's why I used MT-90...

which makes me wonder why this certain person who has alot of BTDT on Audi's suggested otherwise?
