Default Guys, talk me out of parting my car...

Some of you guys are familiar with it some are not.

Lately the cars been sitting alot. Being unemployed I haven't really been able to finish it or legally register it. I've barely driven it in the last 4 months.

I started looking around at all the parts and seeing what I could get for them and the car is worth alot more in parts than complete. Sadly thats just the way it is.

I could use that money for sure. I'm surely not using the car.

I have alot of time, effort and some money into the car. I bought it and it was pretty rough from the get go but I kept trying to get it to be the car I want. I don't know if it will ever be that car.

Opinions welcome.

Here's some pics of the car:

If the A6 is a "good" running driving car, and so is the 5000, you should sell the A6.

It'll bring you instant cash and you don't have to deal with the disassembly and huge mental game of parting out a car that there are clear emotional attachments to.

The 5000 is as wonderful shape that it is in, honestly will bring you less that you hope for for the amount of time you'd have to spend removing and packing and shipping the parts. Then there is the issues of what to do with the stuff that doesn't sell..

No no no.. the 5000 stays and the A6 has to go.

...how was that Steve??

Default I have the same problem sort of

The damn 5000 will not die and I have a perfectly nice A6 sitting under a car cover and depreciating in my driveway. I figure the A6 has already depreciated 3x the parting out value of the 5000.

I don't think the A6 is totally his actually...

What sucks is that he just got the engine stuff sorted out not too long ago.

Default The 5000 is a real quattro system and the A6 is not exactly...

That 5000 is badass, the paint is great, the rims are nice, and the engine bay makes me feel like fuzzy candy. Would you be happy if you bought your 5000 car today at it's current state? 'so why not sell the lame and boring A6.

Thats one clean 5000, wish my 200 looked that nice. Lots of A6's on the road, keep the one that is unique, original and something you dont see everyday knowing you spent the time getting it to where it is now. Sell the A6, maybe down the road when finances are sorted you can get another plain old A6. Drive that 5000...

IMHO, if major things are more or less sorted out than push to sell it complete for whatever price you want (because its unique) to eBay/Audifans/Craigslist/Kijiji. Better to sell it than collecting dust.

Default I was in the same position....You're down, but remember, not out!

I had a '03 Ford Lightning 5.4L S/C'd PU with 15000 miles (perfect condition) making payments on it. I had a '05 B-6 S-4 loaded Avant (modded with Milltech exhaust, REVO Flash, Nuespeed sway bar, Stoptech 355 BBK, BBS CH 18 wheels with Toyo Rt-1 tires and a matching set of BBS CH's with Pirelli sport snows) with about $5000 left to pay on it. I became unemployed in Jan of '07 and have worked a bit since then but not enough to make a difference.
JMHO---The 5000 is a reliable car(absolutly beautiful from the pics) and likely free and clear of any leins. Your A-6, I assume, you are making payments on and keeping the insurance intact on.
This will not be easy, I know, I loved my toys. Only car guys understand this. Like I said, you are maybe down but not quite out, not just yet, and you will be back.
Be smart about this no matter how you feel. Sell the the car that you are making payments on that costs you the most no matter how it hurts. You will gain some equity, lower your insurance costs and lower your monthly outlay in car payments. Insurance for my S-4 was $198 / mo the Lightning was $112/mo. I lost 2 car payments one $417/mo and the other $426/mo. I got around $29000 equity on the S-4 and about $11000 on the Lightning. I was OK to sell the Lightning but I privately cried a bit when I sold the S-4....Oh yeah and I still have my house!!!
I now have a Audi 200 20v, no payments, Insurance for full coverage + Medical $0 Deductible on windshields, $50 Deductible on coollision including comprehensive. Probably overinsured but I like a new windshield here in Colo each year due to the winter gravel on the roads and you can never have too much medical coverage on a car if you are hurt in an accident.
I'm assuming that costs associated with your A-6 are stiff for you now and your 5000 costs will be negligable except to make it street legal (whatever those are). I know that it's not new, some look at it as an older car and not a status symbol, but that is from the outside and they did not do the work to make it look that good. That thing is impecable in the pics and a part out would be a crime. You will have wheels to drive on no matter what if you keep the 5000. Tha A-6 can be repoed from what I have read.
Cut your costs until you are up on your feet. be Conservative....if you part or sell the 5000 and things don't get better they will take the A6 anyway and you'll have nothing but memories.
JMHO, You are no alone, it's a hard decision but you will have something you want again soon. I keep telling myself the same thing Good Luck

Default Sell you knowledge

Steve, To say you know your war around these cars is an understatement. In the last 4 months, I've come across a lot of Audis for sale that have "a few things wrong with them".

there is a guy in Comstock park with a car needing a fuel pump. I think his add is still on Craigs list. Contact him and offer to do the job at less than he'd pay a shop.

I'm not sure if Jim would let you run do a repair shop out of his pole barn, but you can do most stuff right in an owner's garage. If you want me to give people like this your name and number, I'd be glad to. You can make a few bucks that will let you keep that beautiful car.

Or, (this might take a couple bucks of investment) pick up non-running early audis for a song. Then fix and sell. The market for $1,000 cars is huge right now. That poor example of an 87 which you did some stuff for me, sold in a couple days. So did my wife's 86 and there were at least a dozen more people interested in it.

There are also lots of other non Audi's out available that are ripe for making a buck off of. These are the cars that end up in the junk yard because the owners either can't figure it out or shop costs are too much.
