Default exhaust manifold options

Hello typ44 forum!

While removing the turbo studs out of the MC1 single piece exhaust manifold I noticed there are 2 fairly large cracks in the "Y" of the turbo opening(great). Is this manifold junk? I don't want any pieces getting sucked in the turbo or anything & it doesn't sound like a very good idea to grind that section out of the manifold.

What are my options? I'm thinking I'll have to source a new manifold.

Thanks for any help in advance!

Default Re: cracks at the collector don't really matter

BUT. If there are cracks in the runner visible at the outside then you're going to have a leak, and ticking noise when cold.

I would take the entire manifold to the machine shop and have them machine the mating surface on the side adjacent to the head so that you've dealt with the propensity for warpage.

There are folks that have ground out the "y" in the collector, but I never bothered myself. If you replace it go to a 2-pc unit which flows better anyway. It's a bit pricey though.

Default Mine's got the same thing bud...

I think they all do, at least the collection of manifolds I have in my garage anyway. They seem solid and secure, and I don't think I've ever heard of them chipping off and going through the turbo. Beside if it does that means you need a bigger better turbo ; )!!

Later, dude!

"Hello typ44 forum!"

Howdy Greg.

"While removing the turbo studs out of the MC1 single piece exhaust manifold I noticed there to a 2 fairly large cracks in the "Y" of the turbo opening(great)."

No big deal. Common problem.

"Is this manifold junk?"

It was junk from the factory. LOL!

"I don't want any pieces getting sucked in the turbo or anything & it doesn't sound like a very good idea to grind that section out of the manifold."

You won't have this problem with the EM in the condition it is.

"What are my options? I'm thinking I'll have to source a new manifold."

No but you should confirm it's flat and weld the crack along the runner.

Default are they different on a 200 than a 5kcstq ???

I know the intake manifold is different and the non turbo exhaust manifold is different but I've never looked at a 200 exhaust manifold that close. Did VAG offer a better design starting in 1989?
