Electronic Diagnostics on the Audi V-8's

VAG-COM has limited workability with the V8q ... but...
But it's kinda worth it.
I bought a Hong-Kong USB->OBDII connector and a Hong-Kong OBDII->2x2 connector. They work. You can find these everywhere on eBay. The worst part is the configuration, which requires some fiddling around to get to work with the drivers, etc, but it's not impossible.
You don't really need to pay for the full version of VAGCOM because the OBDI features of the V8 don't require it: i.e. all you can really hope to get from the computer are codes, and that's included in the shareware program.
There IS the ability to view about, um, 18 measuring blocks but that gets kind of technical and I think 10 of them are related to emissions.
Having a laptop with VAG-COM changes code reading from a 10 minute project to a 2 minute check.
It will also connect to the Airbag connectors in the center console.
It will not, it seems, connect to the transmission computer, but that's okay because the codes all send transmission into limp mode and are generally, eh, something major.
It will not connect to the insturment cluster to read those codes, but that's okay because there are only 3 or 4.
I bought my laptop at a garage sale for $30 and paid about $20 for the connectors. Worth it to me.
