Cracked Dash....

Cracked Dash....
Anyone have any experience with repairing a crack on the dash. I have a crack about 9" long radiating down from one of the defr. vents down to about the middle of the dash on the pass side. It seems to close up when extremely hot but for the most part it is about 1/16" wide. I could "stop drill" it at the end of it, but what can I fill it with to stay pliable. If I fill it, can I expect it to squeeze out when hot, or pull away when cold? 1987 5000TQ Avant
Thanks all.
Thanks all.

Re: Cracked Dash....
I Have the same problem. It's the only thing keeping my interior from being like new. I tried filler and it looked like SH@#!T. I've come to the conclusion that I'm going to simply replace the whole dash with a nice used one. They are easy to find and shouldn't be more than $40-$60 dollars. It's a fair amount of work to do but not very hard. Or, some people buy those custom dash covers but IMHO those are junky looking.

Be careful...
Body filler would obviously fill the hole, but then youve got the two problems of (1) texture matching... (or the lack thereof) and also (2) matching a color close to you dash, which I must assume is a challenge.
Honestly, unless its a big issur for you, I'd recommend leaving it alone. And while dash's are quite easy to get, I've heard some awful stories about the complexity it can be to replace it... and one of the most dynamic came from Steve Ankney... whom appears to be quite competent with these POS's. ha. He's BTDT... inquire with him.

Re: Cracked Dash....
I would imagine that it will crack again when the temp changes.....
you could try filling it with black silicone? Then again that stuff is glossy and it might look like ****.

I tried filling it...
<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/4612/dash_replacement_001.jpg"></center><p>with the dash repair kits you can buy from FLAPS.
It didn't work well and ended up looking worse IMHO.
I ended up getting a used dash from Dan and put that in.
It was about a 5-6 hour project.

Re: Cracked Dash....
I agree. Those covers a awful. Has antbody tried the leather kit you see on TV to repair leather jackets, sofas etc. It seems to come with a texture overlay while the plastic filler dries so that it will dry with the same texture. It supposedly comes with different colors to match. Basically, i don't want it to grow and I want it to look like the rest of the dash. I know I'm asking a lot, but that dash picture looks a mess Stephen.

Re: I tried filling it... Me too
The texture was no problem, all of the vinyl repair kits come with texture transfer paper. The problem I encountered was a new crack after expansion and contraction. I have tried a few vinyl kits and experimented with various liquid plastics. All failed to some extent. The best, but far from perfect, was the "liquid tape" sold to replace electrical tape when splicing automotive wires.
