93 v8 quattro engine surges
Ok, Im trying to figure out whats causing the very bad surging when at a stop. Its a 93 v8 quattro and basically I cant afford to take it in to have them $$$$diagnose$$$$ it then tell me how much $$$more$$$ it will be to fix! Anyone have any ideas where I should look first, what to check etc? I have a good ohm meter and a good fuel pressure guage. I dont have a repair manual so any help from here would be great.

Okay so this will only "hurt" a little at first..
Step one. Get the manual. There are more copies floating around than Taylor Swift pictures.
Step two. Ebay. Get a ODBII cable that includes a 2x2 Adapter. Search VAG-COM.
Step three. You may need a laptop if you aren't using one already. Craigslist the cheapest one you can find. to install and run the VAG-COM software.
Now that's that is complete you can pull/diagnose your own codes.
OR connect your check engine light and blink them out. be sure to write them down and you can lookup what the codes mean in that manual you just got.
a surge is the result of something; so what's different about the car. Could be bad or mis-aligned TPS, to as simple as a plugged air filter.

Unless this car was originally delivered to California, the CEL was NOT connected as part of delivery. But you can connect them (it) by pulling the drivers side tunnel carpet finding the two pigtails that are taped to the loom and connecting them.
Then you pull the passenger footwell carpet to get to the diag connectors jump the lower left to the upper pin of the adjacent (IIRC) connector with a piece of wire and watch the CEL blink. write them down and google Audi xxxx code. it'll tell you what it means (if you haven't gotten the manual yet).

Its actually not my car, just trying to fix it for someone. It runs rough now but still has alot of get up and go for almost 300k on the engine. I know when it was fairly new it was quite fast.
