Default 5 Cylinder Ignition System

I can't seem to find this anywhere, so I guess I'll ask. Can someone tell me about the 5000TQ ignition system. Does it use 3 coils? I know the order is 1-2-4-5-3, does that mean that 4&5 fire at the same time? Are there 2 or 3 ignition drivers set-up on a 5 cylinder system?

Are cylinders 4&5 synchronized, or is it 1&2?

Default 1 coil, 1 distributor

All the cylinders are synchronized.... 1 fires before 2, 2 fires after 1, 4 fires after 2, 5 fires after 4 but before 3, 3 fires and then we begin again......

Default What about with a standalone?

Would you need only two ignition drivers or three?

I see that it's like a 4 cyl. except with an oddly timed 5th cylinder, right?

Default ummm.......no

its not like a 4 cylinder. The 5 firings are evenly spaced 144 crank degrees apart. No two cyl;inders could be configured on the same coil like a 4, 6 or 8 cylinder engine. If you really wanted to do a distributorless ignition you would have to use 5 separate coils, one for each cylinder.

Default I was just looking at a cut-away engine picture

And it looked like cylinders 4&5 were timed the same and 2&3 were also (counting cyl. 1 as the front).

Here's the pic

Default AAN code engine used two ignition drivers

AAN's were in the 92-94 S4 and the 95-96 S6. One coil pack for 2 cylinders, one for 3. Of course thats a waste spark system not coil on spark.

Default look closer.

number 1 is at TDC. pistons 2 and 3 are at the same height, but not BDC. look at the con-rods and you will see that #2 has past BDC and is going up (it is at 144 deg BTDC) #3 is approaching BDC going down (144 deg ATDC). Similar circumstances for number 4 and 5 which aren't at TDC. 5 is going up (72 deg BTDC), 4 is going down (72 deg ATDC).

Default Thank you...

Wow, that's much more complicated than I first thought. Thank you for clearing that up, there should be a 5 cyl info center somewhere... I searched for this forever and couldn't find anything (Maybe looking in wrong place). Anyway, thanks again... I guess I need a system that will support 5 separate ignition drivers.
