What's the max HP I can get out of an NG motor.....
I have an extra NG sitting around and a new project in the making and I was curious as to the max I can get out of it without exceeding a budget of $1200.00.
I have heard about putting on a 20V head and turbo on it, but 20V heads are not found on every street corner around here.
Any suggestions would be appreciated and if you could be specific in wht parts I would need to go along with your thoughts would be great.
Also, I don't understand any of those other letter codes...AAN, B3..etc so model specifics would help in "85- 87 Coupe 10V" type of format.
Thanks, hope to have it all ready by Carlisle.

130, save your 1200$.
If you can't do the work yourself, the most you'll be able to do is get a cam, which is essentially useless without a header, which is really only effective with an exhaust, and you've already crested more than 1200$ in parts.
An NG 2.3 10V in a 4000Q is already an upgrade.
Here is a quick rundown:
Engine Code:
4000 Quattro: JT (2.2 10V)
Coupe GT: KX (2.2 10V)
Goupe GT 87.5, 80/90/100 Quattro (through 1991) NG/NF (2.3 10V)
5000/200 Quattro (through 1990) MC-1/MC2 (2.2 10V Turbo)
200 20V Quattro (1991) 3B (2.2 20V Turbo)
90 20V/Coupe Quattro (1990-1991) 7A (2.3 20V)
S4/S6 (1992-1996) AAN (2.2 20V Turbo)
V8 3.6 Quattro (1990-1991) PT (3.6 32V V8)
V8 4.2 Quattro (1992-1994) ABH (4.2 32V V8)
That's really all you need to know for now. There are MB/WX, etc. turbos in the early 5000's and Ur-Quattros.
I'll let someone else do chassis codes, I'm outta time.

Re: 130, save your 1200$.
Hey..thanks for the breakdown, I'm not really in need of the chassis codes, just wanted to know the engine codes and what they're found in.
As far as the working on the cars, no one has worked on any of my cars since '72 when I blew the 4 spd in my 65 Mustang. I broke down in '05, when I had no time of my own, and let a supposedly reputable tranny shop fix my Windstar, that will never happen again I assure you.
I already have the 272 cam and 2 1/2" exhaust, but I want more. Rather than the 20V I was planning on putting a turbo on the NG ( I am made a spacer to drop CR }, or maybe a blower from a 3.8 Ford.
Thanks thopugh for the input.

Re: Some basic info
JT:
Most 5 cyl started around 110 / 115 HP in the 4000Q/Coupe GT
There was a 130 HP "special build" in the Coupe.
These are your major players:
"TURBOS"
MC-1 (ONE knock sensor) 162 HP 10V 5000/200
MC-2 (TWO knock sensor) 162 HP 10V 200
Now in 1991 the special USA one model year 200 20V: (3B) 217 HP
Ur S4/6 1992 on AAN 227HP
The interesting thing on the AAN is:
no dizzy
Cross flow head
While all the others had a stacked IM over the EM and distributors in the back of the head.....
Cheap power is 10V turbo, MC-1 or 2. you can split hairs all day over which turbo, compression ratio, big valve head etc...............
Your budget is MC land chipped and tweaked to about ~200 HP IMHO.

Oh c'mon...you can get more than 130
But it will cost you!
3 grand in my engine rebuild (I should be hit with a shovel) and it figured out to around 150 (my goal was 165, so after all that I still failed). Cam, 'header', exhaust, lightened flywheel, balancing, lightening...lots of machine shop work. If I did it over again? Turbo. Building N/A engines simply costs too much for the returns you get.
Or, you can buy a E30 BMW with 165 hp stock and forget all about Audis. Did I just say that?

Exactly, so my statement stands (as does the 3K bill for my motor, as well...)
For 1,200$, even doing the work yourself, there isn't much to be made. 1200 would be much better spent on good brakepads, a trick suspension and great tires over 5 horsepower.

Got the tires and wheels, disc brake conversion on rear and koni sport adjustable front and rear shocks/struts with intrax springs all around. Swapping my sway bars, putting quattro big bar on front and my front bar giong to the rear.
This all on my CGT by the way.
