Default Temp gauge in inst cluster not working

Where do I back track from inst cluster to start testing. Where is most likely culprit(besides the gauge being faulty)?

Default Should be on the top of the coolant elbow at the front of the head.

Here's an easy test; pull the plug off the sensor on the elbow.
Take some wire, ground one side to the engine and shove the other end in the connector so it touches one of the contacts.
Turn the ignition on, the temp gauge should go all the way up and peg quickly.
If it doesn't then try the other contact, if that does nothing then either the guge is bad or the wiring is bad.
If the gauge pegs, then the sensor is bad (this happend to me!).
I ended up putting a new VDO water temp gauge in for more accuracy, unfortunately the sender wasn't compatible, so I had to put a second VDO sender in!

In case your wondering, the second wire that doesn't trigger the gauge is for the little blinking overheat light in the dash.

Default Also!!!

For future reference:
The oil pressure sender looks like a little can and is mounted on the block almost directly below the coolant elbow.
Direcly underneath or above (depending on setup) is the little "0" oil pessure sender that triggers the light on your dash! (it looks like a big bolt with a single connection in the center).
The oil temp sender is located behind and to the bottom left of the crank pulley, it's bolted into the oil pump casting.
