Best way to protect bolts from rusting?
In my travels rebuilding my motor I have wire brushed just about every bolt before putting it back onto the motor. A friend happened to mention that this probably scratched off any zinc type coating that would've been on the bolts to prevent them from rusting.
What should I do to try and fight the rust gods? I've heard rumors of taking a paint brush and brushing on a few coats of diesel fuel which will dry up and leave a waxy coating on the bolts. I'm not sure if this is accurate or not.
My other options are to just run to the parts place and look for some kind of primer to paint the bolt heads with. Anyone have any other ideas - preferably easy, cheap, quick, and effective!

Re: Boeshield T-19 or LPS 3...
both come in spray cans. Boeshield leaves a wax coating and LPS leaves a coating of wax-like lubricant. You can get Boeshield (it was developed by Boeing to protect turbine blades during storage and shipment) at most marine supply stores - LPS 3 at any bearing house.
Of course I just used a whole can of Pro Honda chain lube on all the bolts and exposed parts when I rebuilt the front suspension and sub-frame and discovered I didn't have either of the above.....
