Default bad shifting on 87 4000CS

I just got an 87 4000cs and the shifter is very loose.
I think there is a bushing that goes around the silver ball that connects to the tranny and i was wondering if the fact that that bushing is pretty much non existent could be the problem.
if it is the problem do you know what this bushing is called?
What other things could cause it to be so loose?

Default this is usually it

The shifter housing ball holder thingy usually fails, this is what a good one looks like.

Default You might check your linkage bushings.

the part that Pete mentioned does go bad all the time. But not necessarily causing your problem. BTW, its called a shift lever bushing and it costs around $85.

My shifter was really loose and couldn't even hit reverse and 5th. $20 and 30 minutes later I replaced the linkage bushings and all was good.

Default You would not regret dropping the $190.00 on the 034EFI short shifter...

It made an unbelievable difference in both cars I have had it in. I wouldn't say you could do it in lieu of fixing the tranny bushing thingy's but if you have the money to spend, I highly reccomend it.

Default yes, those are it, in fact that's where I got mine from. They upped the price since then.

But you'll get all 5 bushings. The parts websites only have 2 of the 5.

Default Can you get at all the shift lever bushings from the top? What about adjusting after reassembly...

Seem to recall that there's a special tool, or you can also do it by trial and error. 30 Minutes sounds good!
