Default That's what THEY say, but most people here change it and the filter/gasket(s) anyways.

And it has good outcomes in most cases

Default Bentley Manual states every 45K miles or 4 years (whichever comes first), change fluid. This...

applies to all A6, 100CS, & 100S/CS models. This interval is also listed on the Audi 1997 Maintenance Schedule. Your dealer should know better - suggest you find another "dealer" who really knows the Audi OEM specs/recommendations.

Default This is what my dealer told me...

that it is lifetiome fluid and if I did want it changed it would cost in the hundreds. I have no trans. dipstick, but what do I do? Just drain the fluid from underneath and then fill from underneath as well at the fill plug? This is what I planned to do but dealer said it didn't need to be done. Also, where do I get the fluid, from the dealer? By the way, I've had my car since 37,000 miles and it now has 70,000. And as far as I know it has never been changed.

Default The job requires VAG and other stuff

To properly set the fluid level you'd need a VAG tool (like VAG-COM) and the nearly impossible to get dipstick. You'll also want Audi synthetic ATF ($25/liter or something like that). It's not the straight forward dump/replace the fluid job that it should be. It was about $250 for the dealer to do it.

Default That doesn't quite sound right. You don't need a dipstick, and I don't think you need VAG-com

I *think* the hardest part of the job is just using some pump/siphon to move the liquid froma bottle into the pan through the plug/dipstick hole.

You will need the pan gasket, filter, filter gasket, fluid, and the transfer pump.

You'll know that the fluid level is correct when the tranny fluid just starts to pour out of the plug hole. I also remember reading (IIRC, in the Bentley) that this applies when the transmission is at ~40ēC, aka. warm.

If it turns out that you do need to reset something with VAG-com, just disconnect the battery for ~15 minutes.

Default The level is determined when the fluid is 35 - 40 C, car idling in "P" w/o any elect access on....

The level is correct when the fluid just runs out of the fill hole under these conditions. VAG-COM (or VAG 1551/1552 tool) is specified to indicate the temp, but you can use other temp measuring devices (e.g., thermocouple) to do the same. Note that the car must be level to indicate correct fluid level.
