My son has a 97 a6 avant- with an automatic that keeps giving a code for shift solenoid ground to earth and is stuck in second gear. I’ve changed the trans pan gasket and fluid but I’ve never played with replacing solenoids. The kit is around $139. I also have access to a complete transmission for $145. If it were your project to tackle, would you repair solenoids or just replace the whole thing?

A high end OBD scan tool might local which solenoid is the issue but for 145 that is cheap for an entire complete transmission. I assume this is from a junkyard with no warranty, too cheap to be a rebuilt with warranty

Yes, pulled from a salvage yard. Labeled “A” quality as if that were a reliable indicator. I’m waffling between the Devil I know and the potential one in a new unit.

you found a new OEM 4 speed ZF transmission from Audi? Many parts are NLA when cosmetic but they tend to keep around core parts
