Default Knocking sound - please help!

My 1996 Audi A6 is producing a knocking sound behind the belts. Sounds like it is coming from whatever compartment is between the belts and the top gaskets. Sounds like a screw bouncing around, but I doubt that is what it is.

Thanks.

Default Found the problem

Opened up the timing belt container and found that a round metal fitting had snapped off. It ended up grinding down one of the gears and slicing a gash into my timing belt. Still deciding if the new parts are worth it or to just sell the car for parts...

That doesn't sound like bad enough of a problem to scrap a car over. It sounds like you just need a timing belt job with a pulley replacement. If it were me, I'd fix it. If you scrap it and buy another used car, it too will have problems, possibly more severe ones.

Those sprockets are a $5.00 item at wrecking yards. A full timing belt job including water pump, thermostat, serp belt, tensioners/rollers costs about $250 online. Then just borrow a timing tool and fix it.
