Hello all,
My A6's gas mileage is worse than my 98 A8 in combination. I noticed the RPM @ 60MPH is over 3k which the A8 only 2k. Is my A6 running at 4th and not 5th? The A6 engine is solid, quiet, smooth. The car runs without noise, gears shift nicely. I got new platinum 4 for it a few weeks ago. The combination is only 18-20 max? I don't know if my wife's heavy-footed at the gas pedal or not, but it's not good.

what grade gas do you use? 93 for me
I found That single electrode plugs work better in my a6 and my 100cs..
also check your air filter and try two bottles of fuel system cleaner, one close to empty and the other on the next fill up

the a6 only has a 4 spd transmission.. thats y the rpms are higher than the a8

does sound like you may be driving in 3rd, easiest way to tell is just to make sure it goes through all of the gears, from 1st to 4th. Also, get the codes checked, if there is problem with the tranny it will be there. Good luck.

21-22 MPG with city/highway driving mix. So, I would expect a 1-2 MPG drop for the Quattro driveline from my mileage. I wouldn't use Bosch Plat 4 plugs for the 2.8L engine; best plug has been the NGK BKUR6ET-10 spark plugs for our vintage engines.

Also, your tranny is only a 4-speed; 5-speed trannies started w/ '98 C5 platform.

My '97 A6 is the same and I for sure thought something was wrong for me to average just above 18mpg in a 70%/30% highway/city mixed driving. My car on the freeway at 65MPH is about 3500 as well, and I'm positive that I'm in 4th gear. Everyone here thinks that's normal? Does anyone have any review or gearing data that shows what speed should have what RPM? Most of the car magazine reviews show at 60MPH, the car being tested was at XXXX rpm.

I would expect all highway miles to be about 25mpg's or better
