All, be warned, I wouldn't spend one nickel with this shop!
I've been trying to sort out a problem with my K04 setup and an overboost condition in my car. I was prepared to purchase an ECU from them to solve the problem.... BUT the response I got and I quote "Your problem is not my problem and I care not to waste any time on it". That is from Mike Hoppen.
I guess he doesn't understand the basic premise of customer satisfaction.
Oh, well, you can all make up your own mind, but I know where I won't spend my money. They wouldn't take even 2 minutes to hear me out, and I was willing to purchase. Geez, I should have know, I've heard of this problem before with them.
Alan

Such as:
Was your K04 turbo kit originally supplied by Hoppen ?
Did they provide any hardware or electronics for your project ?
If they did either, I'd be disappointed too. If they didn't, I understand why they don't want to get involved in fixing somebody else's problem.
The two key rules of management:
1. Always make your problems somebody elses.
2. Don't let anybody make their problems YOUR problems.
It's a happy world we live in, isn't it ?
John
Trained Seals Racing

While generally, I agree with your theory. I don't think the way I was treated was appropriate. The answer to your question, no neither were purchased from them, BUT.
Here's where I think the difference was, I didn't protray them as if they were, all I was interested in doing was solving my problem. I know it's my problem, but they are the ones that offer solutions. I was willing to purchase that solution, but Mike was unwilling to even listen or offer any comment besides, it's not my problem go away. That is NO way to treat a potential customer. I don't care what you sell or what you do. I wasn't interested in free advise, I wanted to explain what I had what it was doing and entertain any salesmanship he might have to solve it. Guess none of the above exists because we didn't even get there. It was strickly a "It's not my problem and I'm not wasting any time on it, so go away". Fine, his loss is someone elses gain, and I figured, I should let others know so they don't have to suffer what I did. It was unacceptable, and very unprofessional.
Alan

Alan: Good to see you again. I dont find much to post/respond to on here much anymore, lots of stupid stuff and clueless people (yeah thats arrogant isnt it!) Hoppen pulled the same crap on me back in the spring. In a similar phone call, they refused to sell me the MTM chip which was worked for the K04. They also did it in a manner which left me with a similar opinion of them, very low. Too bad since Im one of the more liberal aftermarket parts junkies on here. Steve.

There was a earlier post of someone who had bought a hoppen K-04 kit, and is going to Garret Lim to improvethings.
As I understand the MTM Kit is supposed to work with all their exhaust system etc.
As I understand the K-04 gives you Air flow to provide 1 bar boost at 6000 rpm.
Your stock turbo with a 1 bar chip from Wett is good for 1 bar to about 5000rpm.
So the extra HP is only generated between 5000-6000 range.
This means that virtually no extra torque is supplied untill 5000 rpm.
Doesn't sound like a big difference for the $$$.
So what i beleive that a lot of tuners are doing is advancing timing a bit more to give
a little more torque in the Lower RPM, thus giving problems on any fuel that is not at least 96 octane. Exhaust at the rev range also becomes important. I think Hoppen is worried about their chip not performing on other exhaust setups, which is very likely
with the mass of so called "Cat back systems" and cosmetic overpriced mufflers like remus etc.
I beleive Hoppen are contracted only to supply a "Set Kit" from MTM.
I have also seen 2 A4's both 96 models that can not even run a 0.8 bar chip
with out massive pinging. Work that one out?
I have performed numerous upgrades to get my K-04 runing right.
Cold Spark Plugs This helped.
Honed Manifold This Helped.
Fuel Pressure Regulator This Helped.
I have order arriving next 2 weeks the MTM Air Ducts from Hoppen.
Also Heat wrapped my Down Pipe This helped a lot thanks to advice from Ned.
I hopefully soon be getting a chip from Nuespeed to try out.
And I have also ordered a Chip from Garret Lim, he is confident it will work well in my car.
Please keep me posted on your results. BTW, I have a K04, have had one since way last summer. Probably second one installed in the US. Steve moyle was #1. I'd very much like to talk to this Garrett Lim, how would you suggest that take place?
Thanks,
Alan
