Hugh,
For about 1200.00 plus shipping, you could have a set of 17x8.5 inch Ronal R-28's with Pirelli P7000 SS size 225/45/17. This is a great deal!!!
You could do suspension upgrades, i.e. Bilstein/Koni shocks and stiffer springs(around 900.00 depending where you buy them from). Remus muffler(10h.p. for 500.00, I think?). You could get a 1.0 bar chip for under 700.00 from Wett, AMS, TAP etc. Winter floor mats from Clair(52.00). You could purchase clear corner and side markers, but I am not real sure of the price. These are some modifications that I can think of right now, but there are hundreds of other things you could do with 1k.
Jake
(hope this helps)

For a $1000? How about Neuspeed sway bars ($335), Neuspeed chip ($170), and four 225/50ZR16 SP 8000 ($364)?

I would say chip and better tires.
If you plan to spend more down the road, don't get the tires until you have enough to upgrade to larger wheels as well. Lastly, if you don't have factory sport suspension, go for an aftermarket setup like Eibach or H&R springs with Koni or Bilstein shocks.
But the chip would be the first thing to get. LOVE mine!!
Dave
'97 1.8TQMS "wett" and suspension upgrade soon.
