I recently bought a 1999 A4 1.8 Quattro and would like some help regarding the purchase of a chip. Are 30 - 50 horsepower gains actually realistic from a chip? I have never heard of such high gains. Which is the best and safest chip to buy? How difficult is the installation? Are there any other modifications that have to be made in order to run a chip? Are there any drivability issues to be informed of? I'll stop here. Any other related help is appreciated
Thanks for all you help
Vince
One last thing. Are there any Philadelphia meets happening soon?
I think the distributor is near Allentown, PA. The 30-50 horsepower gains are very realistic. The 30 hp would most likely come from the Neuspeed chip while the 50 hp would come from the Wett chip. There are numerous chips in between to choose from also. For some chips there is downtime required and some there isn't, it just depends on which one you choose. Installation is very simple and no other mods are required but some people get high performance air filters to go with their chip (the TAP chip comes with a filter.) An aftermarket exhaust is another way to really improve the sound and performance of your chipped 1.8. Some people have complained about rough idling at times but for the most part the people who have chips have had no problems except for not being able to stop driving their newly powerful 4 banger :-).
Jake
p.s. Check the archives because this topic is gone over just about every day.

Iagree with Jake in most respects, including the fact that this is one of the most commonly discussed subjects in the forum. Please check archives. Anyway I still recommend MTM from Joe Hoppen Motorsport. E-mail me if you wish:
<lvic@xensei.com.

I just read an article recently about Garrett. Someone on the forum had linked to a newspaper article on the guy who does the Garrett chips. It turns out he is a med student who does this part time and does chips for just about any car it sounded like. I would rather have someone who is a full time engineer/tuner, and someone who specializes in VW/Audi if you ask me. I have yet to see a review of a Garrett chip, but there are LOTS of us on the forum with Neu/Wett/Hoppen chips.

Vince,
I live in Berwyn PA and I went with the Wett 1/0 bar chip...I couldn't be happier with the chip and the service I received. One big bonus with the Wett chips is the fact that they are socketed which allows you to re-install the stock chip if the need arises (trips to dealer, etc). If we ever have a meet around Philly, I'll let you take my car for a spin.
Andy Hedin
'97 A4 1.8Tqms, Wett 1.0 Bar, ABT Filter, European Headlights w/PIAA SuperWhite's, Tint, etc.

I too was a bit shocked to find out the guy was a med student who did chip tuning on the side. I'm not trying to bash the guy, but I thought some others would find the story interesting. If anyone wants me to repost it or email it to them, let me know.
Andy Hedin
'97 A4 1.8Tqms, Wett 1.0 Bar, ABT Filter, blah, blah, blah

Garrett makes an excellent chip. I have one in my 99 1.8t and inmy 99 porsche 996.
The chips are excellet, and garrett is a brilliant youg man who can make his cars sing like there'sno tomorrow.
My thought is , don't get fooled by a companies ability to position it's self and goods as being great or at least very professional. Or if you can't agree with that, then atleast don't think that just because a company is small then they must not be as good as those well marketed chip manufacturers
