I know it ain't directly A4 related, but, indirectly, in the whole SUV vs. Quattro discussion, I see many reasons for purchasing one over the other. Since The Forum regulars are never short on opinions, I'd like to know how many former, present, or future Porsche drivers are happy that Porsche is going to market an SUV in the US that's built jointly w/VW. A 924/Cherokee for the New Millenium, if you will. (I guess you can guess what I think of the mess.)

You can be sure that they're not going to build this vehicle in Germany; there's no way they could build it and sell it in the US for the target $$$'s. What do you think of BMW building Zs in S.C, or MB building Ms in Ala.? Would you buy an A4 if it was built in Kentucky? How long before they're making M3s and 540is in S.C.?
Think about it.

Fine w/ me if Porsche wants to build SUV's. But if SUV's, then why not pick-up trucks, minivans and garden tractors....oops, I just remembered; Porsche did build garden tractors in years gone by.
BTW, I don't the A4 quattro (ie, sports sedan) and an SUV (ie, truck) as logical competitors.
Mike
... and the quality will lapse. No one can tell me (due to my experience with two 1987 VW Golfs produced in Pennsylvania) that autos made in the USA will equal that of Germany or Japan.
-josh

My family is considering selling our Porsche franchise which we have had since 1971, and one of the two primary reasons for the deterioration of The Marque for us is this ABORTION that Porsche is planning to sell in two years. The SUV project is the subject of MUCH conversation and debate among the US dealer body. I ask almost everyone that I know what their opinion of such a product is, and I respect the opinions of most of the Forum participants. Yeah, even a putz like yourself %)

I think that the new wave of SUVs is pretty pathetic, and esp. since folks like BMW and Porsche want to mess around it gets pretty silly. However, since you clarified why "urgent", I don't think that selling one pathetic car among very good ones is reason enough to drop the franchise. You can always hope that the Porsche SUV will become as successful as the BMW 850 :-)
- Stan
Think about a VW built SUV (size of a Grand Cherokee) with a Porsche badge on the hood and an articulated wind/water deflector atop the rear window. Think about it being made in Mexico or Brazil. After the WORST kinds of gold-chained up-market buyers get theirs ("Hey, did you see Dr. So-and-so's Porsche 4x4?) and dump them after four months, what's next? It's horrifying. Think about the upcoming X-5 from BMW: an Explorer with a kidney grill made in S.C. I just hope that Audi doesn't start out-sourcing assembly to Mexico or Brazil!

It'll be alot more difficult to believe in the Product if the same fellas who bolt together Beetles and Golfs and Foxes in Mexico and Brazil are makin' A4s.

The Jeep has no peer. My A4 is awesome, but when I need to leave the road (and I do quite frequently), nothing balances off-road handling with on-road performance like the GC. If you really think it's an oversized station wagon, then you're not speaking from experience.
