Ever since driving my dad's new A6, I wanted it. I wanted to see my hand when touching the radio when driving at night. Wanted to just barely see things around me. To be able to find the sunroof switch or the map lights in darkness. This LED based light will illuminate the area directly below the dome light. No visible changes on the interior lighting will be performed. All work can be done in the comfort of your home, short of removing and re-installing the lamp unit of course.
May not be to everybody's liking, but it's online now. Takes about 1 hour and costs about $3.
- Stan

Red dome light instructions

Was really interested in trying this out, so I hit Radio Shack at lunch and found the following:
In the 5mm LED side (not JUMBO 10mm), you can get 3000MCD which doesn't say super bright or even bright on the package I have (part 276-307) or you can get 2000 MCD (RSU 11938529...possibly discontinued) all others are less bright than these (800, 500, 10...MCD)
I went ahead and got the 3000MCD LED and will try it tonight or tomorrow night...
steve
Thanks, I've been wanting to do this for some time. I can never find the cup holders at night.
RobS
98 Laser Red 1.8T QMS Neuspeed

I gotta swing by the local dealer and check this out in person before I install it in my car.

I could only get the 2000mcd units, so I think I'll put another one next to the first...
Will I have to add another resistor? I used a 100ohm resistor on mine, since I got the dimmer unit. And if I need to add a resistor, I wire it in series, or parallel?
Thanks...
Rich Quinlan

Quinland

Wow, how impressive, so many responses! I bet not as many people are cutting their fog light wires today :-)
My web page has info on how to compute the minimum resistor. If you add another LED in PARALLEL, you need to compute the 2nd resistor anew, as if nothing ever happened, leaving the 1st in place. If you add a second LED and want it all driven by the same resistor, you need to (a) take the smaller LED voltage of the both for the computation, and add both LED currents (IL) in the computation.
I'd stick with one LED, tho, makes life simpler...
- Stan
So due to the confusions earlier today, I have added the Radio Shack part numbers on my web site. Pretty much remember that you want at least 1000mcd, 5mm diameter, and RED only please.
Cheers,
- Stan

Red Dome Illumination

stan...please post an "after install" picture so we can all see what it looks like. tia
